Description of LCP (Level of Control and Protection)

(Rates are charged as sqft of greenhouse floor space)

1.0

0.34

0.37

Outdoor nursery and field plot space. No environmental controls. Water may be available (although electricity generally is not). Automatic watering and fertilizing may be available for adding by the PI as an option if water is available. No treatment of incoming water can be expected at this level.

1.1

n/a

0.41

Lath House, NO automatic water or fertilizer. Minimal control over the plants’ environment; primarily protection from environmental extremes. No environmental controls. Water is available (although electricity might not be available). No treatment of incoming water can be expected at this level.

1.2

n/a

0.43

Lath House, same as Level 1.1 but WITH automatic water and in some cases fertilizer.

1.3

n/a

0.45

Screen House, NO automatic water or fertilizer. Minimal control over the plants’ environment; primarily protection from pests and environmental extremes. No environmental controls. Water and other utilities are available (although electricity might not be available). No treatment of incoming water can be expected at this level.

1.4

n/a

0.48

Screen House same as level 1.3 but WITH automatic water and in some cases fertilizer.

2.0

0.46

0.51

Greenhouse with moderate control of environment resulting in temperatures that are better than the outside environment. No explicit guarantee for specific levels of the particular variables. Accomplished with relatively simple electro-mechanical controls for temperature, possibly some minimal level of supplemental lighting if the greenhouse has structure and power to support lamps. Fertilizer is generally available, water supply is variable, typically NO reverse-osmosis (RO) or de-ionization (DI) available for irrigation.

3.0

0.58

0.64

Greenhouse with electro-mechanical controls and in some cases electronic controllers for temperature and humidity typically with the ability to keep temperatures within ±10F of reasonable set-points (60 - 80F) when outside temperatures are below 90F and above 40F. Greenhouse has structure to support some conventional supplemental lighting providing power is available. Simple controls for automatic watering (timers) and fertilizer injection to provide one standard injected formula is typically available. RO or DI water is available in most greenhouses, however it may not be available as an irrigation feed. During extreme winter/summer conditions air temperatures can generally be maintained within 20F of the aforementioned set points.

4.0

0.71

0.78

Greenhouse (typically glass) that meet the criteria of level 3 except most of the environmental controls are electronic and in most cases logging/recording of environmental control variables is part of the management protocol. Electronic controllers are generally available for irrigation. Supplemental lighting is typically available with simple timer control. Temperature is generally maintained within ±8F of reasonable set-points (60 - 80F).  During extreme winter/summer conditions air temperatures can generally be maintained within 15-20F of the aforementioned set points.

5.0

0.85

0.94

Core 1 Greenhouses: Same as level 4 except for the following. Environmental control consists of multistage computer control with 4 or more steps for heating, cooling, and shading. Complete electronic logging and storage of environmental conditions. Temperature is generally controlled to be within ±6F of reasonable set-points (60 - 80F).  During extreme winter/summer conditions air temperatures can generally be maintained within 15F of the aforementioned set points.

5.1

n/a

0.99

Core 2 Greenhouses: Same as level 5 except for the following: thrip screening (intake and exhaust), more sensor data (PAR (2 levels), CO2), WiFi access, radiant heating.

6.0

2.00

2.20

Growth chamber with air conditioning, most equipped with lighting (LED, HPS, or MH) and fertilizer/deionized water. The chamber has a temperature range of 40–85°F. Chambers can be programmed with day and night temperature and lighting cycles.

7.0

n/a

4.00

Core 2 Phenotyping Greenhouse: Same as level 5.1 except for the following: Phenospex Droughtspotter with RO irrigation, Phenospex Planteye 3D vision with multispectral imaging.
